At Mowlem, we follow the National Curriculum and teach maths using the White Rose scheme of work. An approach to teaching maths that is based around demonstrating fluency, reasoning and problem solving. These skills underpin children’s understanding and are aided by concrete materials, pictorial representations and abstract methods. This approach enables pupils to spend enough time to fully explore a topic, reinforcing it with practice, before moving onto the next one. All ideas are built on previous knowledge and pupils have the opportunity to develop links between topics and across the curriculum.

Oracy
At Mowlem we believe spoken language to be fundamental to the achievement of all pupils. Developing effective oracy skills is key to raising academic standards, developing wellbeing and confidence, developing social skills and to ensuring that when pupils become adults they can be successfully employed and economically secure.
Oracy is central to our curriculum and to the way our pupils learn.
The development of oracy skills is embedded across our curriculum learning with important skills being modelled, developed and called upon in daily lessons. We strive to develop these skills through explicit teaching, group discussions and through the modelling of effective speech. We have high expectations for how pupils communicate and challenge them to elaborate and explain clearly their understanding and ideas.
Reading
At Mowlem, we are committed to developing pupils as confident, keen and capable readers. We prioritise the explicit teaching of reading skills and, through a well-established culture of reading across the school, fostering a lifelong love and enjoyment of books and reading. Adults and children alike work hard to create an environment where reading is valued and championed. Developing strong reading skills and an enjoyment and interest in reading, is critical to accessing and responding to all areas of the curriculum and because of this, we put as much energy as we can into making sure that every child learns to read as quickly as possible.
The national curriculum programmes of study consist of 2 dimensions:
Work Reading
Skilled word reading involves both the speedy working out of the pronunciation of unfamiliar printed words (decoding) and the speedy recognition of familiar printed words. Underpinning both is the understanding that the letters on the page represent the sounds in spoken words. This is why phonics is emphasised in the early teaching of reading of beginners when they start school.
Comprehension (both listening and reading)
Good comprehension draws from linguistic knowledge (in particular of vocabulary and grammar) and on knowledge of the world. Comprehension skills develop through pupils’ experience of high-quality discussion with the teacher, as well as from reading and discussing a range of storied, poems and non-fiction.
All pupils will be encouraged to read widely across both fiction and non-fiction to develop their knowledge of themselves and the world they live in, to establish an appreciation and love of reading, and to gain knowledge across the curriculum.
Reading widely and often increases pupils’ vocabulary because they encounter words they would rarely hear or use in everyday speech. Reading also feeds pupils’ imagination and opens up a treasure house of wonder and joy for curious young minds. It is essential that, by the end of their primary education, all pupils are able to read fluently, and with confidence, in any subject in their forthcoming secondary education.
Writing
At Mowlem we encourage pupils to develop a love of writing and teach the skills needed in order to become confident and independent writers. We provide children with engaging, purposeful opportunities for writing through immersion in the high quality texts chosen as whole class readers and those which are closely linked to our topic based curriculum. We know that purpose and audience are central to effective writing and with this in mind, teachers plan and deliver lessons which not only motivates pupils to write but that teaches the key writing skills explicitly, systematically and within a context so that they can successfully communicate their ideas in writing.
Children are also taught to plan, draft, share, evaluate, revise, edit and publish their work. Each classroom has a working wall to reinforce the key elements of the text type being studied and this is added to throughout the unit of work so that children are clear about how to apply the skills they are learning in order to produce well-structured, purposeful and creative outcomes. Pupils will be provided with lots of opportunities to write independently and to practise the skills they have been taught and our exciting trips and extra-curricular activities serve as further stimulation for meaningful purposes to write.

- History
History
At Mowlem Primary school we lead an enquiry based approach which engages pupils to become curious and want to learn about the past. Throughout their time at Mowlem Primary school, children will be taken on a journey that will equip them with information about historical events and give them an understanding of how these have impacted on our lives today. Year upon year, children will build upon their knowledge and skills and deepen their understanding of the world around them.
Through the history curriculum, children are encouraged to question why and how, and to research, using a range of sources to find out these answers.
Knowledge organisers
For each History topic taught, we have Knowledge Organisers. These provide specific details of the content of each History topic. The organisers give details of the facts and information the children need to know and understand, together with any specific vocabulary. These are shared with the children and are referred to throughout topics
- Geography
Geography
At Mowlem Primary School, Geography objectives are taken from the National Curriculum and planned in engaging ways for pupils to learn. We believe that geography education should inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives.
A range of topics are covered in each year group throughout the school year to enable pupils to learn about the world and local areas they are surrounded by.
Pupils at Mowlem Primary school enjoy making links to prior learning and we find it essential that topics studied are linked to prior learning to ensure a deeper understanding and breadth of knowledge.

- Art & Design
Art & Design
Art sparks children’s imagination and is a fundamental means of personal expression. At Mowlem we provide a positive, caring environment, that nurtures their creativity and ensures every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential. We aim to give pupils the skills, concepts and knowledge necessary for them to express their responses to ideas and experiences in a visual or tactile form. Pupils will develop an appreciation for different artists, craft makers and designers and has the chance to experiment with different media and mediums. We also provide opportunities for reflection and, with increasing sensitivity, pupils should acquire the ability to make informed, critical responses of their own work and that of others.

- PE
PE
The teaching of PE at Mowlem aims to enable our children to become increasingly physically confident with opportunities to take part in both school and borough wide competitive sport and activities. At Mowlem we strive to support our children to develop positive attitudes towards physical education by delivering a fun and engaging PE curriculum that is challenging yet accessible to all.
We believe that PE can positively affect attitude and behaviour and we want to give children opportunities that inspire them to participate and succeed in physical activity. We are passionate about the need to teach children how to collaborate with others as part of a team and how to understand fairness and equality to embed life-long values.
- Religious Education
RE
Mowlem is part of a wonderfully diverse community and we recognise that religion and belief, for many people, forms a crucial part of their culture and identity. The principal aim of RE is to engage pupils in exploring important questions which religion and worldviews address. This will then allow children to develop the skills needed to understand the different responses to these questions, as well as develop responses of their own.
We believe that RE contributes to spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of all children, and that this makes a significant contribution to helping pupils develop and demonstrate skills and attitudes that will allow them to participate fully in and contribute positively to life in a rapidly changing, multicultural world, through practising the skills of tolerance and mutual respect as seen in Fundamental British Values.
RE is an exciting subject that contributes to pupils’ lives by providing them with opportunities to develop their learning and understanding of people they will meet, work and live alongside.
