There will be lots of exciting learning taking place this year, in all areas of the curriculum. Some of the things your child will be learning in English will be to listen to stories with increasing attention and recall and demonstrating understanding by answering questions during shared reading lessons. They will begin to read words and simple sentences and begin to write labels, captions and simple sentences.

In maths they will learn to count reliably and develop number recognition with numbers 1 to 20. They will also be able to recognise and name 2D and 3D shapes.

They will also be learning about animals and their habitats.

Reading

Reading is very important. Your child will have regular reading sessions in class, but they would also benefit greatly from further reading at home too. Each child will receive a new book to take home every Monday. Please read these books at home with your children to support their learning then return the book. Please make sure that book bags are brought into school each day. Your child be given a reading diary or journal. Please make sure that you read with your child every day and sign their reading diary.

Homework

Children will receive a pack containing the high frequency words that they will be learning throughout the year. Please practise both reading and writing these words with your children.

PE Kit

Please make sure that your child brings in a full PE kit for every session. Reception will have PE on a Friday. For PE, each child should wear shorts, leggings or jogging bottoms and a T-shirt. They will also need trainers for PE. Children in Nursery do not need ‘House Colours’ t-shirts as they are put into houses from Year 1.

 Parent Coffee morning

At the meeting we will introduce ourselves as a class team, provide you with timetables for the term, curriculum information for the year, and Knowledge Organisers which will give you more information about your child’s topic for this term.

There will also be an opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have.
